Design a Beautiful crocheted baby blanket
Designing a baby blanket is probably one of the most fun parts of crocheting a baby blanket. They are several decisions you will need to make about design, color, etc. How you choose to design your baby blanket is up to you. Here are a few things to think about.
Type of yarn
The type of yarn you choose is very important when crocheting a baby blanket. You want to make sure the yarn isn’t rough and harsh against their delicate skin. You should choose soft yarns specially made for baby blankets and garments or other soft yarns.
See types of yarn for more information.
Size of Blanket
The size of the blanket will depend on how old or big the baby is. If you are giving it as a baby shower gift to be used for an infant, you can go smaller. If you are making it for a toddler, it should be larger.
Try to decide what purpose you want the blanket to serve. Will they use it to swaddle the blanket or just lay across? When you are making your chain, lay it down on the floor and examine it to make sure it’s the length or width you want.
Remember, there isn’t much you can do to make it bigger when you are finished. I recommend making the chain the length, so that if you think it’s too small, you can change it to the width. Of course this will depend on what design to use, and if it’s a little to large, they can grow into it. If it’s too small, it becomes useless.
Stitch and Stitch Design
If you are a beginner, you may decide that using a single, half double, or double crochet throughout the whole blanket suits you. You can still make a beautiful blanket with simple stitches.
If you are interested in being more complicated, you can learn some more stitches from 300 Crochet Stitches (The Harmony Guides, V. 6). It is the most complete and easy to use guide for tons of crochet stitches and for a great price!
Colors and Color Design
The color of your blanket can also be important to a baby blanket. You probably don’t want to make it black or jungle green, unless it’s for a small child and those are their favorite colors.
For a new baby, you should generally go for light, pastel colors. If you want, you can go pink for a girl or blue for a boy. Or you can try light yellow, green, orange, or other colors.
You can make the whole blanket one color, or for extra character, you can choose several colors. Choose colors that look well together but that aren’t took close together that they look the same. For example, white and egg shell are so similar that it’s not worth getting an extra color. This is an extreme example, but you get the picture.
Also, don’t choose too many colors. If you are making a rainbow theme blanket, then by all means, use every color of the rainbow. If you are making an ordinary small baby blanket, try not to choose more than four colors to work with.
If you are using different colors, you can do equal length strips in each color, or vary it. I like to use different stitches with different colors. If you do this, make sure that the stitches require the same chain length. Some may be different causing an uneven blanket.
When you begin to design your baby blanket, think about what will work best. How old is the baby who will receive the blanket? What are the colors and designs used in the baby’s room? Ask the parents what colors they would like.
